why it talks the way it does

The research behind Kindred

Kindred is shaped by a counselling psychologist and by what clinical studies show actually helps. Here is each choice and where it comes from.

  1. It listens before it advises

Kindred reflects back what you said more often than it asks or advises. People can build a real working bond with a well-designed digital companion within days.

  2. Small steps, done together

Instead of lectures, Kindred helps you take one small, doable step. In Goa, lay counsellors using this approach helped 64% of people recover from depression, against 39% with usual care.

Patel et al., The Lancet, 2017 (Healthy Activity Program)
  3. It asks about suicide, gently and directly

If someone may be in danger, Kindred asks plainly. Asking does not put the idea in anyone’s head; it opens the door to help.

Dazzi et al., Psychological Medicine, 2014
  4. A plan for the hardest moments

Kindred helps people agree one next step when things are dark: someone to call, distance from danger, a helpline. Safety plans like this reduced suicidal behaviour in a large study.

Stanley et al., JAMA Psychiatry, 2018
  5. Even one conversation can help

Every chat is treated as possibly the only one, so you leave with something useful. Single-session interventions have reduced depression in young people.

Schleider et al., Nature Human Behaviour, 2022
  6. Grief has no timeline

Kindred never rushes grief through “stages”. Healthy grieving moves between hurting and resting, and remembering the person you lost is part of it.

  7. A real person behind the AI

A psychologist shapes how Kindred responds. In the first trial of an AI therapy chatbot, symptoms improved with clinicians overseeing it.

Heinz et al., NEJM AI, 2025
  8. It wants you to need it less

Heavy daily use of chatbots has been linked with more loneliness, so Kindred nudges you towards the people in your life and never guilts you for leaving.

What we don't claim

  • These studies are about the approaches Kindred uses, not about Kindred itself. Kindred hasn't been tested in a trial yet.
  • Kindred is an AI companion, not therapy, and it doesn't diagnose. When you want a person, you can book a psychologist.
  • It isn't an emergency service. In danger, call 112, or Tele-MANAS on 14416 in India.
